How To Make Success A Must

high performance Apr 08, 2020

As a high-performance coach, my job is to guide people to success. While everyone’s end goal is unique, we can all take a similar approach in finding our own success.

So what does that look like?

First, it’s important to note that high performers enter into tasks with the expectation of success. They don’t set out to succeed just “hoping” to do a good job. No, they set out to reach their goal each and every time!

Now, this doesn't mean that they can't accept failure. High-performers just know that failure is an opportunity for learning.

To be successful, it’s important to make it a “must,” not just a preference. Here is how you can make success a must.

1. Associate your identity with doing well.

Researchers have found that high performers associate their identity with doing well. They have positive self-talk that identifies them as successful. They psych themselves up to be successful before they even start a task!

Does that mean they never get anxious, especially when it comes to risk? No! But high performers are willing to take the risk along with the expectation of achieving success.

2. Allow a little bit of obsession.

Do you ever notice that high performers are often thinking about their success? Just take a look at a professional athlete! Now there is a difference between an obsession and a passion, and high performers do walk a fine line between the two. The important thing to remember is high performers care about mastering––not just doing something “ok.”

How can you take your understanding, knowledge, and passion of your business to the next level? Can you receive more education, get a mentor or read up on your field to ignite a stronger passion?

3. Connect with social duty.

People who make success a must have a strong connection to social duty. Whether you call it a calling or an obligation, when we have a strong sense of social duty we are more likely to find that success. When we have an external motivation for needing to be successful, it can result in actually achieving it!

While it’s important to have a strong internal motivation so we stay true to ourselves and passions, there is power in others propelling us toward success, too.

4. Set deadlines.

Talk about external deadlines! Deadlines can be the ultimate reason for getting things done and finding success. Sometimes we are the creator of our deadlines, and other times they are imposed upon us. What matters is your approach to meeting them.

Are you setting up daily deadlines that guide you towards your end goal? Are you viewing them as a must and not just a preference?

At the end of the day, the way we view success is a mind shift that calls for daily practice. This doesn't mean we allow ourselves to be devastated when we fall short of a goal. Instead, it means we remind ourselves that we are capable of trying again, and we go after what we want again and again.

I want you to take the following actions to apply this learning to your life:

1. Write out affirmations that support the success you’re seeking and help you embrace an identity of belief.

2. Take a step towards better mastery in your field. Maybe that's even hiring a coach!

3. Identify who are you working hard for! Who is it that motivates you to strive for this success?

4. Set deadlines for your goals and get after them!
